Reading Buddies Wrap Up!

Reading Buddies wrapped up last Thursday, April 14 for the 2010-2011 school year.Our first year of Reading Buddies was a great one! The students improved their reading skills and had a positive adult mentor to spend time with each week.

A big thanks to The Pasta House Co.and Chick-fil-a for providing appreciation gift certificates for the volunteers. The United Way would also like to thank McNabb Elementary School staff. Mrs. Crockett (2nd grade teacher) and Mrs. Moran (librarian) were vital to this program's success. We look forward to another great year in 2011-2012!

Victory Celebration 2010-2011

The 2010-2011 Victory Celebration was held today at Maiden Alley Cinema at 12:00. A big "Thank you" was given to contributing business, individuals, and volunteers for making the past year a big success at the United Way.

The celebrating started off with lunch from Whaler's Catch. The party then moved to the theatre for a viewing of the Thank You Video, award ceremony, and words from Executive Director Ashley Wright, Board President Joe Tarantino, and Campaign Co-Chair Sharlott Thompson.

World AIDS Day

Heartland CARES, Inc. will be hosting a World AIDS Day event on Wednesday, December 1st. The inclusive, all-faiths event will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, located at 9th and Broadway in Paducah. A candlelight walk will begin at 5:30 followed by a service and program at 6:15. The evening will wrap up with a reception at 7:30.

This event is designed to remember those who have died and who continue to struggle with the challenges of living with HIV and AIDS as well as to be an opportunity to celebrate the future as new treatments and continuing research give us hope for a healthier future. Reading Buddies Begins!

The Reading Buddies program at McNabb elementary school kicked off on Thursday, October 14. The fun began with Kevin Spencer of Spencers Theatre of Illusion (http://www.spencersmagic.com/) performing some exciting magic tricks reminding us all that reading is magical.

After his initial performance volunteers were introduced to their Reading Buddy. Each pair of Reading Buddies attempted pto perform their own magic trick instructed by Kevin Spencer. They also completed a get-to-know-you sheet to get better acquainted.

A good time was had by all. A big thank you to the Spencer's, McNabb elementary school staff, and to each volunteer. The United Way of Paducah-McCracken County is excited to see relationships grow as well as a love for reading!

Sat Oct 23rd is National Make a Difference Day. In conjunction with this day The Senior Center of Paducah McCracken County and E-HOMES (Elderly Home Owner Maintenance & Everyday Security ) will be winterizing homes of Senior Citizens. Volunteers are needed for this project.

Work hours will be 8 am -12:30 pm. All homes will be located in McCracken county and materials are being provided by the E-HOMES program. Those wanting to volunteer please call 443-8579 and give us the number of volunteers, name of group and a contact persons name and phone number.

The Senior Center is also looking to broaden the client base of the EHOMES Program. Clients must be low income, residents of McCracken County age 60 and over, and own the home that is in need of minor repairs and this winterizing project. Seniors can receive help with other minor repairs such as plumbing, electrical, security, locks, hand held shower units, grab bars etc. Please call the Senior Center to determine eligibility for these services. Repair Affair

The Midtown Alliance of Neighbors is a nonprofit formed in 2008 with the purpose of creating strong neighbors and neighborhoods within Paducah, Kentucky, through education, community activities, and home rehabilitation.

The Midtown Alliance of Neighbors is planning Repair Affair Fall 2010. This is a one-day event where teams of volunteers come to people’s homes and complete pre-determined repairs. The Midtown Alliance of Neighbors is looking for teams and individuals to come out on Saturday, October 16th, and work to make the homes of several limited-income homeowners safer and nicer places to live.

5K Run and Fitness Walk

Since 1994, United Way 5K Run and Fitness Walk has been an annual event for over 500 runners, walkers and volunteers from as far away as Florida. This is also been a wonderful event for the entire family and community groups to enjoy and promote health and fitness. Since 2001, the race has offered children ages 12 and under to participate in the Rehab Associates 1-mile Youth Run.

Paducah Photos From The Eyes of a Child...

In an effort to raise funds and awareness for United Way's Project United 2010, Talia Housman, age 11, hit the downtown streets of Paducah with camera in hand. With the innocence of an 11 year old, she selected sights and scenes that caught her eye. What her lens captured are those same images that resonate with several Paducah generations, inherently recapturing memories. She then digitally enhanced her photos to express a sense of nostalgic community. That is the same feeling she wanted to ignite in Paducah's citizens across the city as they unite to help out on September 10, 2010.

Sets of 10 3.5x5 prints will be sold for a donation of $10 per set. 100 sets have been packaged in the hopes of raising $1000.00 for Project United on Friday, September 10.

The United Way is excited to announce that we have saved our community $85,339 to date with the FamilyWize program. Through this initiative, we have distributed thousands of discount prescription cards to pharmacies, community agencies, and businesses. Reading Buddies

With the desperate need for mentoring initiatives in our community, the United Way is excited to launch Reading Buddies, a program aimed at fostering a love of reading in young students. Modeled on the lunch buddy initiative, Reading Buddies will match local volunteers with individual students in a McNabb Elementary second grade classroom. Buddies will be expected to attend weekly reading sessions every Thursday from 11:00-12:00 starting Thursday, October 14.

Interested in participating? Volunteers are still needed. Please contact our office for more information. All volunteers are expected to attend a Training/Information Session on Monday, August 23 from 12:00-1:00 at the United Way office.

Join us in our second annual Stuff the School Bus drive as we collect school supplies for all city and county school resource centers. Volunteers will distribute supply lists and collect donations at Southside WalMart on Saturday, July 24th from 10:00-1:00. Impact Poverty

The United Way of Paducah-McCracken County has formed a Task Force entitled Impact Poverty to study, evaluate and create a plan to address poverty in Paducah/McCracken County.

“The United Way Board was obviously concerned to learn of a recent rise in the number of people living in poverty, particularly in Paducah. This was brought to our attention by John Williams, Sr. and was based on some very detailed research.

“United Way has been working for several years to go beyond just meeting individual needs and find ways to help our community begin to really solve problems. This new poverty data led us to take the definitive step of creating the Task Force to work with the community to address root causes of poverty, not just continue reacting to its effects,” said Georgann Lookofsky, past chair of the United Way.

Impact Poverty will collect, interpret and analyze existing data related to poverty and identify the major contributing factors unique to our community. They will also evaluate existing initiatives that offer support or transition to people living in poverty. The goal of the study is to develop a 10-year plan to address poverty in Paducah and McCracken County as well as provide strategies to break the cycle of generational poverty. Recommendations in the plan may be directed towards local and state government, existing service providers, new initiatives, and the business community, at large. A Steering Committee will guide the course of the work. Its members include John Williams, Sr., Judge Cynthia Sanderson, McCracken County School Superintendent Nancy Waldrop, Paducah City School Superintendent Randy Greene, Michael Byers representing the Paducah Chamber Board of Directors, Georgann Lookofsky, past chair of the United Way, Kristin Williams facilitator for the process and, Ashley Wright, United Way Executive Director.

Impact Poverty is comprised of approximately 40 community, educational, civic, religious, and business leaders who will begin work in June. They will meet monthly and hope to present findings and a 10-Year Plan to the community by summer 2011. Early in their work, members will spend a day together receiving the nationally recognized “Bridges out of Poverty” training.

“In consulting with other United Ways around the U.S., we found that many are using this training to better understand poverty’s impact on people and communities and improving the likelihood of welfare to work. We are excited that one of the books’ co-authors, Terie Dreussi Smith, will be conducting the workshop for Impact Poverty,” said Ashley Wright.

Kristin Williams, the group facilitator said, "Poverty is an exceedingly complex issue and not one that can be solved quickly or with one single solution. Because of its complexity, it is important to approach it from as many different angles and as many different viewpoints as possible. I am a strong believer in the power of a diverse group of people passionate about positive change putting their hearts and ideas together to address our community's issues."

Help is here to lower the cost of medicine, thanks to a free drug discount card provided by the United Way. “No one should be forced to choose between paying for food, rent or medicine because of the high cost of prescriptions. That’s why we’ve partnered with FamilyWize to distribute free prescription discount cards to everyone in Paducah and McCracken County”, said Ashley Wright, Executive Director of the United Way of Paducah-McCracken County. “People in our community have already saved over $70,000 just by using the FamilyWize card.”

FamilyWize cards immediately lower the cost of medicine by an average of 30% or more for people without insurance or who take medications not covered by their plan. Just by presenting the FamilyWize card at their local pharmacy, customers save on the cost of their prescription medicine 80% of the time. “So many people are struggling with the high cost of medicine and need help right now. We knew we couldn’t wait years for healthcare reform to be implemented. The FamilyWize card provides immediate savings on prescription medicines, with no paperwork or forms to fill out,” said Dan Barnes, Co-chair of The FamilyWize Community Service Partnership.

These cards can be used by everyone in the community, not just people without insurance. They can even be used by people with health benefits, including Medicaid or Medicare.

The United Way is gearing up for this year's Community Investment, with panel members joining us for training tomorrow and Friday. Community Investment is the process by which our campaign dollars are allocated to our partner agencies. Each agency submits applications for funding under one of our three focus areas- Education and Care of Children, Strengthening Families, and Emergency Assistance and Crisis Prevention. Panel volunteers are assigned to one focus area and spend two days visiting agency sites and reviewing applications in budget hearings. Thank you to this year's panel members! The Paducah Day Nursery seeks to enhance child care services for low-income working families, families enrolled in educational facilities, and children identified as "at-risk." Operating on a sliding scale, solely based on the family’s ability to pay, the Paducah Day Nursery is open from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Paducah Day Nursery provides a framework within which families can productively work or attend school while being assured that the children are safe, well fed, and cared for.
